REFORGER 81 Certain Encounter
V (US) Corps reviews its Combat Readiness in the Fulda Gap

Following the strategic redeployment exercises (REturn of FORces to GERmany) REFORGER 76 Gordian Shield and REFORGER 78 Certain Shield in the operational area of V (US) Corps in Hesse, Germany, REFORGER 81 with its field training exercise Certain Encounter once more took place in the area of responsibility of V (US) Corps in September-October 1981. The Certain Encounter corps training exercise was conducted as a force-on-force scenario with Blue units (friendly) and Orange units (enemy), each with the strength of one division. A total of 70,000+ soldiers with 4,787 tracked vehicles, 15,601 wheeled vehicles and 600 aircraft and helicopters deployed.
This publication uses impressive in-action photographs to show the American, British and West German vehicles involved as well as the various phases of the exercise.
