The M 48 Main Battle Tank in German Army Service
After the stopp-gap-solution with the M 47 main battle tank, the first US-built M 48 A1 reached the Modern German Army in late 1957. With the later variants M 48 A2, M 48 A2 C and M 48 A2 G, the range could be modernised and upgraded until it reached most modern standards with the M 48 A2 G A2. The M 48 family of tanks thus shaped the core of the Bundeswehr's Armoured Corps up to the introduction of the Leopard 1 and 2 MBT's. Only in the late 1993 the success story of the M 48 in German service came to an end.
